Hi Ron If you dig your plot over a few times before sowing it will expose any slug eggs to feeding birds . Consider putting in a small pond ( size of a bucket ) and introduce some frogs to eat the slugs. Nematodes are another option, they are microscopic eelworms that feed off and kill underground slugs, you can order them online. You could also consider growing slug resistant types of potato.

Hello Ron, Apart from the remedy already mentioned you could try trapping the slugs. On the surface of the soil lay pieces of sack or large leaves, in fact anything will do to cover the soil and attract the slugs. In the morning lift and dispose of any slugs, preferably not over next doors fence! You can try beer traps, sink an open top container in the soil (eg plastic cup) so top is at soil level, and then fill with beer, save some for yourself. The slugs are attracted and fall in and drown. Replace after a couple of days. If you have the time and inclination after dark do a torch light search and collect any slugs you find and dispose of. Keep the area around your patch clean to reduce places for the slugs to gather eg old pots/containers and in wet seasons expect more slugs, dry weather discourages them. Hope this and the other advice given helps. Phil
