Loquat

Posted by Jill Lawrence, on
My loquat tree started to lose a few leaves last autumn after being healthy for a number of years. Since between January me end of feb this year it suddenly shed the remainder of its leaves. Otherwise it doesn't seem dead but as it is evergreen and seemed to be thriving I am concerned. Could it be too much water perhaps given the recent weather or something else. Would welcome advice.

After further research It seems Loquat trees also suffer the same kind of diseases as native apple trees such as fire blight and Phytophthora Rot. You can send cuttings of your plant to the RHS Members Advisory Service at Wisley to identify and see if this is the case, they will also be able to advise on a treatment.

Hi Jill Loquat trees will always shed a few leaves in autumn but they need good drainage so the recent weather may not have helped. The rain may also have washed much needed nutrients away from the roots so try and improve the soil with some mulch and keep as well drained as possible. Hope this Helps Mark Surrey Hills Landscaping
