Hello Marilyn, Ideally they should be mashed up through a chipper to aid decomposition when mixed with other material in the compost heap. If you do not have a chipper you could try cutting up or bashing with a spade, but time consuming. If there is alot it might be better to take them to the recycling centre, they will not rot down quickly by themselves even with a compost acelerator. Regards, Phil
