Wooden trellis for problem fence

Posted by Leila Ahmed, on
We have a close boarded wooden fence fixed with concrete posts about 2.4 metres apart. There are metal brackets fixed to the posts supporting 3 rows of barbed wire across the whole 8 metres length of the fence. Is it possible to remove the barbed wire and fix wooden trellis on top of this fence, or would I need to replace the whole fence? A problem is that the neighbouring house has ivy breaking through our fence in many places. I'm afraid ivy would pull down any trellising fairly soon, and maybe will take down the fence too. What solutions would a carpenter/garden designer suggest?

Hi Leila you should be able to remove the wire and replace with trellis panels ( you may have to have them made if the posts are 2.4m apart), the existing metal brackets may need to be replaced with a suitable fence bracket ( you can buy these from DIY store). Ed
