Hi Hazel, It sounds to me like the grass does not have great drainage or is on clay. Either way you have very bad water run off. The 1st thing to do, is get some aeration holes in the grass using a fork or aerator tool. This will help get rid of the immediate water & allow the roots of the grass to breath. Ultimately you could be looking at either pulling up the lawn, digging some decent drainage runs & filling with gravel to allow the water to drain, alternatively you could look at artificial grass (much more expensive & would still need the drainage.)
