Terrible drainage on lawn?

Posted by Hazel Maguire, on
I rent a flat with a small grassed area 12ftx12ft approx whenever it rains it sits on the top like a pond. It is surrounded by concrete which is higher than the grass itself. What do I need to get done to remedy the problem? I am disabled and don,t want to get ripped off.

Also Hazel, if you are allowed to do it or speak to your landlord, about creating drainage runs through the concrete surround. Rather than pulling up the lawn drainage runs could be fitted around the lawn.? Worth asking

Hi Hazel, It sounds to me like the grass does not have great drainage or is on clay. Either way you have very bad water run off. The 1st thing to do, is get some aeration holes in the grass using a fork or aerator tool. This will help get rid of the immediate water & allow the roots of the grass to breath. Ultimately you could be looking at either pulling up the lawn, digging some decent drainage runs & filling with gravel to allow the water to drain, alternatively you could look at artificial grass (much more expensive & would still need the drainage.)
