My house is next to a pathway, mud and grass runs along side it

My house is an end terrace and ends next to a pathway.
Directly running along side my house is a patch of mud and grass. The grass is obviously easy to cut\strim but I would like to get rid of it altogether to avoid more damp and having to keep strimming the grass that grows there. What's the best way to do this? I was thinking gravel but I'm put off from the fact that kids walk past sometimes and I don't trust them not to kick it about or throw the small stones.
