Up front payment

Posted by Victoria Balchin, on
Is it normal for payment of more than half of the value of the job to be up front before the job starts? For fence replacement. I am being told it is usual and that I need to pay for the materials. I am happy to pay the first day they turn up with the materials but before that seems risky.

Hi Victoria I personally never ask for a deposit upfront but some people do, it just depends on the tradesperson. I wouldn't give anyone a deposit either especially if it was someone you had never used before, explain that you are happy to pay for materials once they are on site but not before. if they are not happy then get someone else. Hello Victoria A deposit Is usually 20% of total amount but can be more. All I would say is get the tradesman to make out a deposit invoice of total amount wanted. Name/date/signed bank transfer if possible/Have it on bank record if the worst happen you have proof. I have asked for deposits I the past as materials can take up to 2 weeks for delivery and this is how I do it. Shane
