It is corrosion, the gas pipe was replaced last year but where the new pipe touches the wall there is a white powdery crust and a hole underneath.

that should not happen the only thing i can think of is the lime in the mortor might have corroded the pipe. when it is replaced make sure they protect the pipe with tape. it is common practise not to protect the gas pipe but the enginer should always give consideration to outside factors when runnig pipework and protection rom corrosion is the most important
