Worcester Combi Boiler Losing Pressure

Posted by Jason Handy, on
Just moved into 2 bed flat and had boiler serviced, it's losing pressure and I've been told I need a new expansion tank. The guy said the part is two hundred pounds. The boiler is 7-8 years old. Am I being conned?

If the vessels was checked and attempts were made to recharge the vessel with a foot pump, If all the above was tried and failed then a replacement is needed. It seems that some trust is needed too, don't use people you don't trust and have to second guess.

Hi Jason firstly there should be a few questions the guy asked- are there any visible leaks? Does the pressure shoot all the way round past 3 on the gauge and then release water via the safty pipe outside? If there are no visible leaks then he could have done two things - drained the boiler off and check the expansion vessel using a pump ( repressurise to 1 bar) replaced the shreider core in the valve. If the vessel will not recharge then yes it would need replacing, but on a 7-8 year old boiler nine times out of ten it just wants recharging the same as your car tyre would....? Could he fit a remote vessel ? If the vessel is at the back of the boiler then the boiler would have to be removed from the wall to replace. If I were you Jason I would get a second or third inspection done, and mention a few of the things that I have said. P.s if the guy just touches the top of the valve and says" there is water in it" ask him to pump it up to check as a lot of the time there is condensation building up. All these check should only take about 15 mins cheers tony @ sml gas ltd.
