Central heating pipework

Posted by Raghu Rathore, on
Hi I am thinking of changing my central heating from single pipe to double pipe system? Is it a big project ? its a 4 bed house with 9 radiators in total. Any advise on time and money would be really helpful. Thanks R

Hi Raghu It's not a big project for someone competent. One pipe system will be joined to both sides of the radiator so this pipe can still be reused as long as the one side is disconnected and coupled. If this is used as your flow circuit, you will require another pipe (known as the return pipe) that will go from the boiler to the radiators. I am assuming you currently have a combi boiler as you haven't specified the exact details. Attempting this yourself is a bit ambitious if you have little or no experience in this field. This type of job would not longer than 3-4 days and price wise you would be looking at around £600-800 labour & around £300 for material. Best bet is to put an ad on ratedpeople.com detailing the make of the boiler, age and type of system, whether you will be keeping the same rads and valves etc. Also put down if the property is occupied, floor covering in the rooms etc. Put a budget of £1000 to get people buying the lead as it has to be realistic as the site no longer offers refund if we don't quote for the job. Hope this helps. Sam (eps)

Hi raghu On a properly designed one pipe system there is a pipe which bypasses each rad, so only a portion of the flow (approx 30%) actually goes through the rad. The water flowing through the rad then mixes with the water through the bypass and enters the next rad at a slightly lower temperature. This is compensated for by installing increasingly 'oversized' rads. (The output of a rad depends on water temperature). The total temperature drop over the system will normally be about 11C. You would required new pipe work installation so it is a big project but it can be done within a week for experienced gas engineer. Best regards Rafal
