Hi. My Mum has a Gas fire which has been switched off by a plumber/heat engineer who found that her chimney does not have a flue. This despite several British Gas engineers performing services on the fire and not once mentioning the potential hazard.
She needs to either remove the fire completely and block up the wall or preferably have a heat engineer install a flue and remedy the situation.
However, we have been advised that only the plumber/heat engineer that decommissioned the fire can work on it. Is this true? If so then that seems odd as we only have his (seemingly high) estimate to work with. And due to difficulty of obtaining alternative estimates we're not sure how much this job should reasonably be.
