Can I reface my kitchen cupboards if they are RTF?

Posted by Sarah Campbell, on
I think my cupboard doors are RTF, just from what I have read on the internet. Firstly how can I tell if they definately are (as they were there when we moved in) and if they are, how can I give them a face lift that's cost effective?

Hi Sarah I've never heard of RTF ( rich text format?) inrelation to kitchen unit doors, do you mean MFC or MDF possibly? MFC is basically chipboard covered in melamine and MDF is medium density fibreboard usually covered in a vinyl wrap. They can be over painted to improve the appearance, you can get specialist MFC primer and topcoat. Follow manufacturers instructions for keying surfaces and application. Hope this helps.Thanks. Ed.

Hi Sarah, I would first use a 220 sand paper, and wet n dry the doors. (this should take out any imperfections) Then a spirit based substance too clean them. Use a spray primer following recommended instructions. Then spray the colour of your choice. You will have to use a laquer based substance for scratch resistance, but 2-3 coats of this would do(Dependent on how shiny you want them) It is quite a time consuming tedious job, but does look very good when done. Hope this helps Andy
