Hanging kitchen cabinets safely

We just bought 2 new horizontal cabinets from Ikea (for badly needed extra storage) While drilling pilot holes in the plaster to find the studs, we realized that we went right through the wall into the stairwell adjoining from behind! And to top it all off, found no studs where the cabinets need to go. Is there a way to hang them so they are structurally sound?
