250mm Loft Insulation in an 100mm Loft?

Posted by Waz Kayani, on
Just had some excellent feedback to a question on lofts I posted yesterday (thanks Radoslaw). My house is 1923 built and timber joists are 100-120mm high. 100mm of insulation will go in easy and then boards back on top however, I would like to put in as much insulation as I can to keep things warm. Question: If I put in 100mm between the joists, could I run some new timber in right angles across the top of the old joists and then lay another 100mm of insulation down. Obviously, floor will rise up another 100mm but that's fine - I only use Loft for storage.

Hi Waz there is no problem in running the timbers at right angles to the existing ceiling joists, this is my own preferred method when boarding out a loft has it allows you to fit additional insulation and keeps the boards off any cables etc that run over the top of the joists.Thanks. Ed.
