Do I need a breathable membrane between slate roof and Celotex

Posted by Yvonne Gibson, on
I have a slate roof, the slates are simply nailed into the wood on the roof. Do I need to put a breathable membrane between wood on the roof and the Celotex insulation which has foil face on both sides? I know I need to leave a 20-30mm gap between the roof and the insulation, but there's loads of nails (used to secure the slates) sticking out of the wood, so, if I have to use the breathable membrane, the nails will stick through it!

Hi Yvonne it sounds like you are trying to add the membrane to a roof that is already slated!? To work properly the membrane is fitted underneath the tile lathe prior to fitting the slate, there is no point trying to retro fit the membrane as it will not work. Aslong as you leave a suitable gap ( 50mm recommended) between the insulation and the tiles to allow ventilation and prevent condensation you should be fine. Thanks. Ed.
