These areas have more reasons for cracking than most due to the movement of shutting of doors and traffic up and down stairs. They also combine plaster and wood which explains some shrinkage as the wood expands and contracts with the indoor temperature. With new build houses there is often cracking due to settlement. In older houses subsistence can sometimes be the cause and requires major action to remedy the underlying causes.
