To plaster or not?

Posted by Graeme Fleck, on
In the house that I am buying, there are still polystyrene tiles on the ceiling of 3 rooms. My question is, when these are removed, will the ceiling need plastered, or could I get away with just painting?

Karl Hockless

There is a very good chance that the adhesive that was used to stick the tiles will be partially left on your ceiling. You should therefore be prepared to have a re-skim done. And it may even be necessary to have the ceiling over boarded prior to skimming depending on what damage is caused when the tiles are removed. Either way I would urge you to have the tiles removed as they give off toxic gas in the event of a fire. Don't be tempted to just overboard them.

In my experience when taking off polystyrene tiles from a ceiling it leaves the glue marks which is hard to get all of it off therefore it needs to be plastered

I agree with steve below, generally like woodchip too, these were put up to cover and mask bad areas.although woodchip like tiles were slightly a fashion many years ago.you will simply have to take tiles off and see what you are left with.also the time and effort to make good a ceiling after taking down tiles or woodchip you simply might be better off getting is skimmed anyway.depending on who is doing the work and what standard you are after.

Sometimes if you take tiles off it will leave small glue spots if you wet them and scrape them off you might get lucky and be able to paint otherwise its a rescim I'm afraid goodluck from steve

Hello Graeme You will more than likely need to have the ceiling reskimmed, ceiling tiles in my experience are usually only put up to hide A bad surface, good luck with it . Thanks Dean @dwplastering

YOU WILL FIND THAT WHEN THE TILES ARE REMOVED, THE CEILING WILL NEED A COAT OF P.V.A AND THEN R/E SKIMMED

Hi Graeme, i expect you will need to replaster, the tiles come off really easy but the adhesive is more dificult to remove, best thing it to remove a small sample area and then you will have an idea to budget and program the work. Best regards Tim.

Hi Greame, In my experience people would use these tiles to hide bad ceilings. If ceiling was ok you would still have glue marks which was holding tiles on. Stuart Aitken Get it plastered ltd
