rendering shouldnt do that. theres lots of reasons but if its come away in a chunk that size, it cant belong till more is falling off. its there to protect the walls from the weather, and to give a smooth surface to paint. if youre in an area of the country that gets hard driving rain the walls can become saturated and dmap, even if they are cavity ones.
