Cracked plasterboard

Posted by Graham Darroch, on
We have a crack in a plasterboard roof caused by stepping on insulation in loft. What is the best way to fix this. Can it be plastered over. Crack is cross shaped about 40cm by 15cm. Thanks

Hello Tracey, You can plaster over it. But I would suggest a site visit is a free service to you so why not take advantage of it. Tradesmen pay for the opportunity to quote on your job. It is important to give tradesmen contacting you the opportunity to do so, the advice you receive is free. You are not obliged to use any of them. Regards Michael

hi tracy best way to repair is to cut out the cracked plasterboard in a nice neat square then get some 2x1 timber and screw it through the face of the plasterboard half of the timber on the good plaster board and half sticking out in the square hole you have cut out ,then cut a bit of plaster board to fill the hole and screw in to the timber, the clever way is to cut the new plasterboard patch first hold it up to the ceiling on the cracked piece draw round and cut out the hole then you will have a perfect fit .Next with your patch screwed up nice and tight place scrim tape round the patch paint with pva and skim with multi finish plaster job done , I would recommend that you post the job on this site and get an expert to do it for you its sounds easy but if you have not done this type of work before you are better leaving it to an expert i would charge in the region of £50.00 for this job but would have to see it first kind regards Alistair Ewen
