Depends on size of hole, easy to reair, just cut back the hole to nearest joist,plasterboard and skim,or plasterboard hole PVA rest of ceiling then skim it al Dave DS Plasterers [Halifax ]
Hi john best way is cut it so it's a neat square or oblong , cut a piece of 2,by 1 batten a bit longer than the whole Screw the batten under the ceiling then cut a new piece of plasterboard the size required & screw to the batten then plaster Level, can use a couple of battens if required G. Branch plastering
