Repairing or replacing damaged render on peroid property

I need to replace and or repair old and damaged external render on period property . What is the best approach ? Does all old render need to be hacked off or only blown areas and should the new coating be sand /cement, lime based or are the new "protective coatings" such as Krend or Andura products suitable
