Getting the back wall of my house rendered?

Posted by Angela Linton, on
The brickwork at the back of my house is pretty grotty in places and I suspect it's no longer waterproof - as the inside walls got damp after the heavy rain we've had. I'm considering getting it rendered - would I need the brickwork repaired first? Or would just putting on a coat of render fix the problem?

Hi Angela. It is possible that the repairs to the brick would stop the damp to the walls. once a brick face as broken down it will be like a sponge. Also once the face has gone it will leave a small ledge for water to collect on and soak into the wall especially a solid wall. If your house was built pre 1940 is was probably built with Lime. it is therefore best to repair in lime or if you decide to render then render in lime. If your house was built using lime and you use a cement render it will crack due to the different movement between the building and the render. If the property is old and has no damp course and you render in cement it will hold all the moisture that comes up through the brick work in and will either create a damp problem inside or decay the brick behind the render. Cement render does not breath and lime render will. HGope this is not to confusing. If you would like to discuss further please do contact me. Regards Colin
