You can dot & dab wall , if on old plaster you have to green it or blue it with grit which will bond adhesive to wall , leave for 24 hours then dot & dab with plasterboard, tape joints several times & sand down G, branch plastering

Plasterboarding. Can sheets of plasterboard be stuck onto wall, scrim tape bedded and smoothed over and painted - how does this compare to a layer of finishing plaster?

Of course. This is the modern way to plaster a wall. It compares very well with old fashioned wet plaster. Have a look at u tube how to dab and plaster a wall. JC
