Artex ceilings

Hi, recently moved into 20yr old house with stipples artex ceilings throughout. Keen to have them ‘smoothed’ over to modernise whilst redecorating. Getting varying advice on whether to scrape high points, and then just skim over or whether need to overboard. Keen to just reskim to avoid removing all coving etc but are we taking a short cut?

If the stipple pattern isn’t to heavy just scarp any high spots off unibond or pva over the artex this should be fine to plaster over using multifinish
