Horizontal cracking running across ceiling

Posted by Daire McCormack, on
Hi, I've just purchased a flat and moved in a few weeks ago. The flat is in an older building which has recently been refurbished (with newly plastered ceilings) and we are the first occupants. When we carried out our building inspection there was no issues, however after the first month horizontal cracks have started to appear along the length of the ceiling. The cracks are not large at the moment (1-2mm), but are becoming more pronounced. There is one horizontal crack running the length of the ceiling, which steps around the middle. There is also a second crack running perpendicular to this across the ceiling around the middle (the cracks do not join). Any idea what the cause could be? Should I be concerned? If I want to get them investigated should I be calling a plaster or builder/structural engineer? As it's my first home I'm quite concerned about it so any advise would be really appreciated! Thanks!
