We have 2 old pipes running up the wall (Victorian tenement) beside our fireplace that seem disused. Diameter 1.5". How do I find out if they're safe to remove?

Colin, Get a Plumber in to look at pipes and advise you. They sound like to me old Back Boiler pipes. Bill Pipe Dreams Plumbing Services, Bournemouth, Dorset

If they are 1 1/2" then It may be a communal overflow, very common in scottish tenements, back boiler pipes are more commonly 1" or 3/4" , but a plumber should be able to tell you in 2 mins

What would you like to do now?
