Hi Angie. Your plumber's request seems fine to me, he's just covering his back. How does he know that you are going to pay him at the end of the job? For works over £1000 my company request a 30% deposit up front and also for work over £3000 we request a 40% deposit. As long as the companies' terms are clear to you and you agree I don't think there will be a problem, make sure you get a receipt.
