I bought the exact pump stipulated by the plumber but the shower only works if shower head is left in the bath. how do I fix it so that it works when turned on?

Get the plumber back! it seems like its not able to get a flow past the switch to start the pump when the head is in the holder, is the head of the shower quite near to the tank feeding it? it could be that a negative head pump is required
