Lesley, I assume you are talking of Iron Pipe. To replace a section of Iron Pipe you need to remove it by unscrewing it from two connections, allowing removal of damaged length of pipe. These could be quite a distance apart depending where on the run it has been damaged. Then you fir Iron to Copper fittings and replaced damaged section of Pipe with Copper Pipe. The other way is to fit Johnson Couplers which is too cut out a section of Iron Pipe over 12 inches in length by using a Angle Grinder or Hacksaw. Then you can fit them at each end with adaptors to copper pipe and then fit a section of Copper Pipe between the Johnson Couplers, but you will need a gap of about 1.5 inch between Iron Pipe and bottom of Floorboard, Also, the odds are that if a section has started to corrode, then it will not be long before other areas will start to do the same, so I would suggest that you start re-piping Central Heating where Iron Pipe exists.
