Rattling radiators

Posted by Jim O’Donoghue, on
In response to Ian; We have an unvented system with a Worcester combi boiler. When I bled the radiators water came out of all the downstairs radiators and only one of those upstairs, with the others there was a hissing sound of air being released initially but gradually stopped, I expected water waited a few minutes but none came. These radiators were only warm at the bottom. I hope this helps.

Hi, It sounds to me like you have a pressurised system which has lost pressure. the hissing you hear when you try to bleed the radiators is not the sound of air being released from the system rather air being introduced, so every time you try to bleed the system it will make the problem worse. you need to top up the pressure then bleed the radiators, the pressure will probably need topping up several times during this process. I would recommend you get a plumber as you need to find out why there is so much air in the system, it may just be down to lack of maintenance or you may have a leak. you need to be careful not to over pressurise the system as well as the pressure relief valve will activate if you go above a certain pressure & this could cause the valve to letby.
