Boiler replacement - Residential block of 13 years old

Posted by Nhi Dang, on
Hi all, My existing boiler is a Combi Ariston (I don't see any water tank around). I believed that it has been there since 2003. Now, I wish to have it replaced. It has 2 pipes connected to it. And the flue pipe goes up into the ceiling, out to the building communal passage and it then either exits to the side of the building or the rooftop. if it does exit to the side of the building (on the same level), then the length of the flue must be around 10m. A few engineers who have visited have different opinions that confused me greatly. Engineer A: To replace the existing boiler, the whole flue system (which belongs to my flat) must be replaced too. It is illegal to replace the boiler without replacing the existing flue pipe. Engineer B and C: Just need to find a boiler model that accommodates the existing flue system. I am seeking advises from more engineer visits. But, for now, I just want to throw this out to the open and gather your opinions. Many thanks if anyone can help

Hi ,from what I understand definitely a new boiler will need also a new flue system as it is against the regulations to fit a new boiler to an existing old flue . Also you've mentioned a vertical flue route in this case you will need to make sure that the flue is visible at every joint (here the need for inspection hatches if the flue is concealed). Last point a combination boiler connects to 5 pipes plus a condensate (plastic) pipe . Regards

Most certainly you will need a new flue installed, one specific to the model you choose, also your old boiler will probably be a non condensing boiler where as all new boilers are condensing boilers, the flue material has changed. Make sure all of the flue is visible, of this is not possible make sure you install inspection hatches along he route of the flue.
