Water overflow pipe from cold water tank in loft leaking

Should I go and have a look at the cold water tank in my loft to check that the plastic ball isn't stuck as there is water dripping out of the overflow pipe outside my bedroom window ion the first floor. Its been happening for about a week now and sometimes its just a constant drip and other times its a bit more but doesn't drip all day. I am a 60 year old female and would rather sort the problem myself than get a plumber round who will charge me something stupid to fix a simple problem (I hope)
