Water penetration of gable wall

The gable wall of my semi detached house is southwesterly facing and gets the full impact of any stormy weather. The roughcast is worn looking and I think cracks are causing water to seep down onto the lintel above the door. Is there some waterproof treatment that can be applied and should I look for a specialist to solve this problem?
