Structural engineer needs holes in ceiling to c joists. Is this normal?

Posted by Georgina Newcombe, on
Hello, we want to remove a wall but the structural engineer said, to make sure it's non-load bearing, he wants two holes in the ceiling, either side of the wall. The holes need to be big enough to inspect the floor joists above. Is this normal? Two big holes in the ceiling! How would we even patch these up afterwards? Many thanks.

cut out neat squares, batten on to side of joists, cut new plasterboard to correct size and screw to new/existing timber, tape the edges with Scrim and skim over. Fairly straight forward for a decent plasterer.
