Soundproofing out neighbours

Posted by Ruth , on
In small 1930s semi and can hear everything from next door. TV, radio, talking, coughing. Is it possible to soundproof rooms (bedrooms so we can actually sleep at night) or would more work have to be done? Say soundproof into loft and downstairs to make it beneficial?

Hi Ruth If you do build a stud partition wall , make sure you stand it off the party wall by at least 25 mm as this also stop sound transfer , there are two types of sound , one being airborne sound , the other physical ( where one surface touches another and sound is transmitted through physical vibrations Regards Craig Notts renovations

Hi Ruth Yes as the previous answer suggests, I would agree that this is the best solution, if you can afford to loose the depth by using a say 50mm insulation board plus plasterboard where required. (Plasterboard Maybe not required in loft if not a habitable space) Regards Kevin Davies

It may be best to build a timber frame on the required walls and fill full with insulation to dampen the sound.
