Damp proofing

Posted by Lisa Upcraft, on
1 small living room in an old cottage with some damp areas. I have had 1 quote for £1600 + vat to take plaster off on every wall, tank and replaster. Is this price reasonable? The surveyor only picked up damp on 2 walls (1 off which was an adjoining wall with cottage next door)

Hi Lisa Firstly , sorry to hear you have a rising damp problem ( if it is rising damp ) secondly regarding the price , it really depends on a couple of factors , you say it's an old stone cottage ? You have to be careful what materials are adhered to stone as the wrong materials can cause more damage , generally on older stone properties a lime based backing plaster and lime finishing plaster is used , as cement based products only damage the stone further and don't allow the walls to breath correctly , certainly if the building is listed strict replastering guidelines will have to be adhered to , also it depends what part of the country you live in , either way it's a specialist job and I'd say the price is about right Regards Craig Notts renovations
