Soundproof my living room

Posted by Andrew de Selincourt, on
I am planning to put in an independent ceiling. It would be made of timber joists and 2 layers of acoustic sound block plaster board weighing 30kg each. The room dimensions are 4.2 m x 5.9 m. What thickness of timber joist would I need - 47 mm x 150mm or 47mm x 175mm? As each plasterboard weighs 30kg. I am concerened that 150mm may not be strong enough to prevent the timbers bowing in years to come.

Hi Andrew You may wish to consider using a sound proof rubber matting that is stuck onto the existing surface then can plasterboard with 1 sheet over the rubber mat. Regards Greg Ugauge Ltd
