Exposed stonework internal wall

We live in an old tenement flat from late 1800s. We've removed the plaster and am not sure if the quality of the stonework is any good, its a mixture of stone and brick with lots of lime mortar and gaps. My husband has tried wire brushing but apart from creating lots of dust, doesn't seem to be achieving much. Any tips?
