Bathroom Tiles blown; How long to dry before retiling?

Posted by Anthony Willis, on
In the planning stages of getting a new bathroom fitted. Have discovered that water from shower has been penetrating the tiles (I assume through the grout) and the tiles are blown (when you tap them they sound hollow). Whats the best course of action to take before retiling; Should I remove as soon as possible to allow to dry out? Maybe I only need to do this a couple of weeks before installation?

Hi Anthony When work starts and you have removed all the tiles if the wall/plaster is badly damaged remove the plaster and or plaster board and board the area with water proof shower boarding, this will not need plastering and can be tiled on the same day, and will protect your walls in the future if water penetrates the tiles again. regards Ian Handyman express

Hi Anthony If water penetrated a wall for a long period it could be very wet so plaster will come off I am affraid. I would suggest to remove tiles at the same stage when bathroom refurbishment is going be done then you will see what action would have to be taken. In worst scenario you would have to replaster or overboard walls then tile after everything is dry. ( to tile on new plaster you need to allow to dry and in average time it should take up to 2 weeks to dry completely, if overboarding needs to be done it will take about 24 -36 hrs before tiling) I hope this can help Best regards Rafal
