Cracks in Tiles

Posted by Graeme Stangoe, on
I have just moved into a 12 year old house. The kitchen floor tiles were replaced about 2 or 3 years ago apparently, but now there are three long cracks running in parallel, 1.2m apart. The tiles are laid on what looks to be 6 or 9mm ply, which is in turn laid on top of T&G chipboard flooring. Are the cracks caused by insufficient thickness of ply, or a more serious underlying problem?

Good Evening Graeme, Given the house is only 12 years old it is unlikely that the problem is anything other than incorrect fitting. It is very important that the correct fixing adhesive and procedure is used where ceramic times are laid over a wooden floor. Not following correct procedure will result in cracks appearing between tiles. ie, insufficient adhesive under the tiles and/or not using flexible adhesive which moves with the natural movement of the wooden floor. I hope this helps Regards Steve
