Tiling a bathroom with large porcelain tiles

Posted by Mandy Smith, on
Several questions as we believe we are getting a shoddy job. Complete bathroom fit out. Everything ripped out, walls were not made good by re plastering there were huge chunks taken out of the walls and tile adhesive was used to fill in the plaster. Large 600 x 300 porcelain tiles have been put on the wall badly using at least 15mm depth of adhesive to counteract the poor surface being tiled. Should we be worried? Uneven gaps between tiles which is now shown up worse by the grout. A whole inch has been lost on one wall as so much adhesive has been used that the face of the tile which is 10mm thick sticks out by 25mm from the wall. At our wits end but don't know what to do?

Hi Mandy , It is not good practice the way the tiling has been done By the sound of it . It is always best to ensure that all walls are flat and level Before any tiling is done and that time spent doing that is time well spent later on . Not sure on wether you got a company to carry out the full install or different companies to do different jobs . This would complicate it as they would just blame each other . The tiler would simply blame the who ever was supposed to do the initial rip out and preparation etc . Bottom line , my advice would be to remove all tiles and ensure walls are prepped correctly . Regardless of cost it would give peace of mind that the job has been done correctly . Hope this helps

This is tricky to give you an answer without seeing what’s gone on with this work But in general if the walls are so bad and so far off level you would expect the fitters to point this out and discuss with you ways in which this could be remedied even if it means a bit of extra cost to the customer it’s not really a good idea to start trying to level things out with thick beds of adhesive if nothing else that pretty expensive to buy

What would you like to do now?
