Tank or not to tank a shower?

Posted by Doug Larner, on
Is it necessary to tank a shower not on the ground floor? If so what does it involve?

Hi doug, It depends what type of shower it is.If you have a shower tray then it is not necessary to tanlk the walls. If the shower floor is being tiiled then yes, it is essential to tank the floor and at least 1metre up the walls. tanking kits are available from tile suppliers such as topps tiles or look for a supplier on the net. hope this helps. ppete.

Yes. You need to water proof the floor at the least 900x900mm to the gully. Plus. Water proofing the walls near the shower area. Ps. You dont have to tank thr whole bathroom.

If it is a wet room with a tiled floor and no shower tray then yes it needs tanking. In a nutshell, the tanking process is where tape is applied to the corners and joins and a waterproof coating is painted on. It is not always necessary to tank the floor if a shower tray and enclosure are being installed. However, I would recommend the use of a cement based board (Aqua panel, no more ply etc) in place of standard plasterboards in the wet areas of the shower.

I agree with Pete, if a tiled floor - ie a wet room then yes tank the floor and half walls with a tanking kit. If a shower tray then position and tile the walls with tiles overlapping the tray, if tiled and grouted correctly then this provides a waterproof wall. Use a good quality silicone to seal the join between tile and tray. Hope this helps.

It is not necessary to tank a ground floor, assuming its solid ie concrete. If its a raised wooden floor, which some are, then you would need to tank it. This involves a tanking kit, we use a company called Impey, have a look on their site to find out more. Jim
