Sealing bath tub

Posted by lisa white, on
I have taken off the old sealant around my bath and have discovered a gap between the bath tub and wall tiles which is deeper in some parts. I could be wrong but I have a feeling that the bath might not have silicone around it before tiling. Can anyone recommend what I would do with the gap around the bath or do I just go ahead and seal the bath and tiles with silicone?

Hi there A really good secret for you. Run a line of masking tape either side of the gap. Then use mould resistant silicone to fill the gap. Run a wet finger down the silicone and then remove tape. You end up with perfect straight lines and a perfectly sealed bath John - The Man Handyman

Hi Lisa It looks like the bath tub was never installed correctly in the first way. The correct way of installing a bath tub is as follows: 1. The bath tub should be attached to both wall it is adjoined to. 2. The bath tub is then filled with water, checked for any leaks. If all is fine it is siliconed to the wall and left to dry. This is called the primary seal. 3. Once the tiles go on and and are grouted, a neat bead of white silicone is applied. Again the bath tub must be full of water to weigh it down. The above leave it with a clean finish and is 100% leak free. You can fill the gap with silicone but may not look the best in appearance. I would clean it thoroughly and fill the tub with water before siliconing. Hope this helps. Sam (eps)
