Fibreglass shower room

Posted by Sue Buckle, on
We have a shower-room which was tanked with fibreglass some 20 years ago. It has sprung a leak. Investigation has shown that it is the waste pipe which has a hole in it, so this needs to be dug out from the fibreglass tanking. We are struggling to find a plumber who feels comfortable doing this, because no-one seems to know how to repair the seal. Will epoxy resin and/or Isopon 38 or 40 create a strong enough seal to allow a new trap and waste pipe to be installed, the tanking to be repaired and the tiles relaid? Our house is grade 2 listed, so it is important that we get it right.

Hi, it is possible to repair/patch fibreglass with fibreglass matting/cloth/tape and resin but most plumbers will not feel confident working with fibreglass (its a skill in itself). Your best bet for a fibreglass patch repair would probably be a car body/boat repair technician. It may well be more cost effective to replace the tray section with a new tray section, associated waste fitting and re-do the tanking partially up the walls as most wetroom specialists would be willing to do this work. Hope this helps
