Staged payments

Posted by Gill Taylor, on
On a bathroom refreshment costing £4600 how much is acceptable to be asked to pay upfront before work is started? (Fitting is costing £2440 the remainder goods)

Hi Gill, my company always ask for one third of the total amount as a deposit. This will allow your fitter to pre order goods ready to start your job. (And to confirm your fitting date) Balance then to be paid upon completion. Although some companies may want a payment in between. As long as you get a receipt for the amount you pay that is a normal and fair procedure. TV programmes make all tradesmen out to be con men. As long as they are not demanding all the money upfront i would not worry too much. The vast majority of us are hard working, honest individuals.
