I would think it would be lime mortar, or maybe lime mortar concrete, that's a mixture of aggregate sand and lime. I'm sure they used that mixture to build the old tile kilns Best of luck. JC

Could some one give me the mortar used to build a brick oven in the old days before they made special concrete

Mix would likely be: 2 parts washed sharp sand 1 part nhl 3.5 hydraulic lime. Hope this helps
