This depends on the contractor. Try not to give up front but some builders can't afford to lay out everything in advance. Ask for invoices for the materials and one can pay that if necessary, also some of the wages per week but be careful you don't pay more than what has been sorted. Work this out with the builder before they start, don't be bullied by them! Have someone with you if you are easily bullied.
