How do i mix a strong batch of mortar. do I use less water

Put more cement in mix Usually 4 sand to 1 cement ratio which can be used below ground also. Recomend to use plastisicer with this. Adrian Freeman and Green

Assuming the mortar is not lime based the strongest you can mix using building sand will be 3 / 1 sand / cement. When using at this strength it is essential to use a plasticiser otherwise cracking is likely.

You never need it too strong or it will crack. Use the formula 6 sand, one cement and one lime. Mix them all together thoroughly. Then add water till you have the consistency you require. The amount of water does not make it stronger, but too much will make it weaker and difficult to use. JC
