House very old. No damp course. Damp inside house on external wall. Would repointing and waterproofing external brickwork stop damp.

Good afternoon Morag, it would be worthwhile getting somebody in to take a look, but usually repointing and water sealing will remedy any penetrative damp issues. If the property is pre 1915 it is probably constructed using a lime mortar. It is essential that the new pointing material is also a lime mortar. No cement can be used as this will compound your problem.

Hi Morag Sorry to hear about your damp problems , firstly I would recommend that the source of the damp be identified , but as you say there is no damp proof course present, I would recommend that a new damp proof course be installed, there are a few products out there but we currently use the Dry zone method which comes with a 30 year under written guarantee , once this is installed and along with any pointing that is required then the internal damp patches can be repaired using again the correct Dry zone materials and application , but first and foremost a new damp course should be installed to rectify the cause. I would recommend posting on Rated People under specialist jobs , then Damp proofing. hope this has been of some help to you. Regards Craig

Hi Repointing and damp proofing will help to a certain degree but not fully resolve this issue. Most dampness comes from below ground level and will travel up the structure until it meets a DPM. In your case damp will continue to rise as there is no DPM in place. Hope this helps.
