Is possible to paint melamine? And will the finish look good or naff?!

I am wanting to revamp my kitchen without spending too much money. I can't just change the doors as there are side panels and trims etc. Is it possible to paint melamine and will th finished result look good or really cheapen the look of the units?

It is impossible to get paint to stick permanently to plastic eg melamine. in light use areas it will look fine for years, but anywhere subject to abrasion, ie. around handles it will fall off eventually. Kind regards Paul
